On the surface, it might not seem like football and construction have much in common. After all, one takes place on the field and the other at jobsites and gridirons. But take a closer look and you’ll see the parallels between the team sports. On both sides, players must work together toward a common goal, whether that’s to win the game or win the satisfaction of clients. Those big goals are the overarching objectives for countless plays along the way to victory. Every single play must be well-thought-out, planned, and performed collaboratively. In both construction and football, there’s no room for lone wolves.
Football and construction have both had to reimagine how they play and win. Winning teams aren’t clinging to former ways of getting things done. On the field and the jobsite, innovation and collaboration fuel these new approaches to playing and working. Construction and football teams are finding ways to win by harnessing the opportunities presented by these challenges. Technology, particularly connected data and analytics, is helping to uncover and leverage these opportunities for success.
On December 10, we’ll dive into more of the parallels between football and construction at our event, Autodesk Construction Zone. Vice President & General Manager of Autodesk Construction Solutions, Jim Lynch, will be joined by legendary Hall-of-Fame wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion, Jerry Rice, for a virtual event like no other.
During the Construction Zone – Virtual Event with Jerry Rice, Jim Lynch will have a fireside chat with Jerry Rice. Up for discussion are the surprising similarities between construction and football, the current state of football, the power of hard work, and how cloud technology is supporting new ways of working (and winning). Don’t miss your chance to learn from one of the most hard-working and legendary athletes in football.
For the Love of Hard Work: Jerry Rice’s Plays for Success On and Off the Field
Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receiver to ever play in the National Football League and arguably the greatest player of all time. As a Hall of Fame wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion, Rice is known for winning three Super Bowls (Super Bowl XXIII (’88), Super Bowl XXIV (’89), and SB XXIX (’94)) and one Super Bowl MVP. During his 20-year NFL career, Rice achieved 36 NFL records, scored the most touchdowns in NFL history (208), and holds virtually every significant career receiving record, including receptions (1,549), yards receiving (22,895), all-purpose yards (23,546), touchdown receptions (197) and consecutive games with at least one catch (274).
But behind all of those monumental wins was meticulous preparation and unmatched work ethic. Rice sowed the seeds of this determination as a young boy in Crawford, Mississippi, where he helped his father with brickwork and famously chased down the family’s black stallion, Pete, for a ride each day. Much like front-line construction workers, Rice never shied away from hard work. Instead, he embraced it fully, allowing it to chart his course to greatness in the sport of football. Case in point: Rice is known for his daily two and half-mile run up “The Hill” of Edgewood County Park & Natural Preserve in San Mateo County, California. This level of commitment helped him to bring his team’s playbook to life as a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Seattle Seahawks.
Rice has taken being a team player to the next level on and off the field. He made countless game-winning catches throughout his football career, most famously catching three passes during the Super Bowl XXIII. Off the field, Rice collaborated with Anna Trebunskaya to take second place in the second season of the ABC hit reality show Dancing with the Stars. Rice serves as the Honorary Chairman for the San Francisco 49ers Foundation, helping to educate and empower Bay Area youth. He’s brought his ideals of determination and greatness to his lifestyle brand, G.O.A.T. Fuel.
