How Coordination Helps Reduce Rework
As a BIM coordinator, you might be wondering: why should I care? Chances are, you’ve got a lot of other things on your plate.
According to a report by JBKnowledge, most rework comes down to inaccurate field data. Getting ahead of these issues in the coordination process can be a huge cost saver on your projects.
When we talk about the coordination process, a lot of the responsibility for working through constructability problems falls onto the BIM coordinator. If you can get your field team high quality, clash-detected, and clash-resolved model data quickly, that gives you more time to get ahead of constructability problems and ultimately reduce the amount of rework that happens onsite.
Breaking Down the Old Coordination Process
To paint a better picture of what this looks like today, let’s break down how to work through the coordination process solely in a product like Navisworks.
Each subcontractor, consultant, and fabrication team builds their own model, then shares that model and data with the general contractor, who then aggregates them in Navisworks. A BIM coordinator at the GC then analyzes the models for clashes, generates a clash report in Excel, and shares that report with the design teams. Discussions are had (usually at the weekly coordination meeting), and each team goes back to work to resolve the clashes that were assigned to them.
This process gets repeated until the coordination issues are resolved.
In a typical coordination process, the BIM coordinator is the only person with full insight into what needs to be fixed or redesigned. As a result, they end up spending a lot of time doing things like:
- Setting up rule-based clash detection
- Dealing with thousands of “false clashes” that don’t require an expert to solve
- Corralling models
- Downloading files
- Creating spreadsheets
If design teams want to look at clashes on their own, they need to have both Navisworks and access to all the multi-discipline models.
This process works, but it can also lead to bottlenecks as project partners rely solely on the BIM coordinator to handle it all. A lot of the BIM coordinator’s time becomes consumed with manual work, which eats away from their ability to turn things around quickly.
Ultimately, this process costs your company both time and money.
